SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The owner of Vic's Ice Cream in Sacramento, Craig Rutledge, recently died, the ice cream parlor's management announced Wednesday. He was 73.
Vic's Ice Cream first opened in 1947 on 3199 Riverside Blvd. in Sacramento's Land Park neighborhood and served ice cream, hot dogs, sandwiches and daily specials.
More recently, Vic’s opened a café connected to the ice cream parlor.
Rutledge was a great man and friend, said Tyler Gilson, a manager at the ice cream parlor who's worked there for about 10 years.
"He had a lot of ties to the community and people are going to miss him. Craig and I were close," Gilson told ABC10.
Having deep ties with the community, Rutledge also served as a Land Park Community Association board member and later as president.
He spent most of his life in Land Park, graduating from McClatchy High School before running Vic's Ice Cream with his father, according to the Land Park Community Association.
His father Ash, who co-founded the ice cream parlor, died in 2010 at the age of 90.
