NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif —
Update: Lou's Burger announced on Wednesday in a Facebook post that it is buying the property and will remain open during the escrow process.
Original Story:
Lou’s Burgers, the popular North Highlands drive-in burger stand, is closing its doors after more than 60 years in business.
The news of Saturday being the last day folks could try the homemade shakes and burgers led to a line spanning down Watt Avenue. Former employees and passionate customers were saying their final goodbyes over lunch.
Some came from North Sacramento, others came from farther away like Utah just to support the owners this weekend.
Owners Robert and Leilan Kitchens say they haven’t been able to reach a deal with their landlord about rent — forcing them to close if no deal is made.
“I’m trying not to think too much about it cause I’ll just sit here and cry,” said Leilan.
Robert says the last week of business has been busier than they’ve ever imagined.
“We have been slammed,” he said. “We never thought we could even get that much meat out the window.”
Known much for its throwback look and prices, many have fond memories of Lou’s Burgers since it opened in the 1950s.
“I’ve been coming here since 1986 with my dad, you know what I’m saying? I love this spot,” said customer Tim Teegan. “You can’t get a better burger than Lou’s Burgers, you know what I mean? It’s the bomb.”
While there’s still some hope the owners will reach a deal with their landlord to keep the business open, people were ensuring their potential goodbye was one to remember.
"I's gonna be real sad," said customer Michael Thayer who has been going to the shop since 1968. "It’s the heart of North Highlands."
