SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A man was arrested Monday in connection with a Rancho Cordova homicide from August 2022.
Amyis Coogler, 19, is accused of killing 20-year-old Corey Shearer, a former Amador football star who was fatally shot at a party on the 3000 block of Ramsgate Way, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Coogler would have been 17 at the time of Shearer’s death. Sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi said because Coogler was a minor at the time of Shearer’s death, any homicide case would likely start in juvenile court.
Gandhi said through DNA evidence collected during a remanded arrest, deputies identified Coogler as a suspect in Shearer's homicide.
Jolene Pimentel is Shearer's aunt. She told ABC10 in 2022 that he was known for his loyalty, athleticism and being a good friend. He was the oldest of four children and his parents' only son.
Pimentel said at the time she didn't know much about the circumstances surrounding her nephew's death. After the shooting happened, she and other family members drove to multiple hospitals trying to get an update on his condition.
Shearer's girlfriend reportedly called and advised dispatchers about the shooting.
"She had to witness that," Pimentel said. She came to the hospital as we were leaving. She had blood...all my nephew's blood all over her. She stayed with him."

Coogler's previous arrests
Coogler was arrested in May 2023 by the sheriff’s office gang unit in connection with weapons possession, Gandhi said. Coogler was then released.
The following month, Coogler was arrested and accused of robbing a man at Bambu, a dessert and drinks café near Stockton Boulevard and 65th Street, Gandhi said.
The victim, Quy Do, told ABC10 then that he didn’t see any of his four assailants holding a gun, so he tried to fight back.
"Four of them jumped out and grabbed me and (held) my hand and tried to take my watch…two of them punched my face,” Do said. "I just held my watch and (tried) to get away and punch them back, and (tried) to get up and run. But they just attacked me, so I fell down like three times," he said.
Coogler was booked in connection with Do’s robbery in June 2023, Gandhi said. Additional charges for other robberies Coogler is accused of were added this month. Coogler has been in custody since June and remains ineligible for bail, jail records show.
The same records show Coogler’s next Sacramento County Superior Court appearance is scheduled for April, but Gandhi said it will likely change to an earlier date once murder charges are processed because Coogler will need to be arraigned again.
