Man arrested on attempted murder charges of Sacramento officer

While the investigation continues, the suspect has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail and awaits court proceedings.

The Sacramento Police Department have arrested a man on attempted murder charges of an police officer.

The incident happened on Feb. 22 at approximately 11:08 a.m. when the department received a call about a man with a knife near Elvas Avenue and 63rd Street. Once officers arrived on scene, they detained the suspect, Juan Carlos Heras-Castro, and transported him to a hospital for an mental health evaluation.

Heras-Castro was able to break free and fled from the officer northbound from the hospital, but was found at 39th and H Streets. He resisted arrested and during a struggle got ahold of the officer's firearm and fired multiple times.

An off-duty firefighter stopped to help the officer, allowing the officer the opportunity to get control of his firearm. Heras-Castro was taken into custody and the officer only sustained minor injuries from the incident.

While the investigation continues, the suspect has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail and awaits court proceedings.
