Man faces life in prison after shooting at Sacramento police, striking nearby home

Ismael Herrera Mondello was also accused of stabbing an inmate earlier this year during his incarceration at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Sacramento County District Attorney's officials said Ismael Herrera Mondello was convicted of attempted murder on a peace officer after a stolen vehicle chase.

Sacramento police spotted a vehicle reported stolen on July 7, 2021 and attempted to make a traffic stop. That's when the driver reportedly took off and drove recklessly though a residential area near 65th Street and Fruitridge Road.

Modello repeatedly shot at the officers and struck a nearby home before running off and forcing his way into another home, district attorney's officials said. The homeowner ran out of the front door to safety.

SWAT officers deployed teargas into the home until Mondello exited.

He currently faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and the sentencing is set for June 28.

Mondello faces additional charges after he and two other inmates were accused earlier this year of stabbing another inmate five to six times during recreation time.
