Multimillion-dollar SacRT light rail station approved for construction in reversal vote

After initially voting down the light rail construction last year, SacRT board members reversed this decision Monday and construction will now move forward.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — SacRT will build a new light rail station in Sacramento's River District after transit officials reversed an earlier vote to shelve the project Monday.

While board members voted during a November 2023 meeting to forego a new light rail station in favor of more bus services, SacRT VP of planning and engineering Laura Ham said this option might not meet the funding criteria.

"Based on the information provided, staff recommends that the board approve a motion to reconsider the Nov. 13 vote as you already have," Ham said Monday.

The estimated cost for construction of the proposed Dos Rios Light Rail station is $45 million.

California's Strategic Growth Council provided a $23 million grant for the project in 2018 and the proposed location is along North 12th Street between Richards Boulevard & Sunbeam Avenue.

Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, whose district encompasses the light rail station, said the new details emerging from Monday's meeting swayed him to reverse his earlier vote against the project.

"SacRT staff has also been evaluating and planning to apply for other recently announced grant opportunities that are likely to provide additional gap funding for the project," he said.
