1 dead, 2 hurt after chain reaction crash along I-80 in Sacramento

The Sacramento Fire Department said two people were taken to the hospital.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a chain reaction crash along Interstate 80 in Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento Fire Department, the crash happened on eastbound I-80, just west of I-5. 

Fire officials said five vehicles were involved, three of which caught fire, and two people were taken to the hospital.

The California Highway Patrol said a driver in a pickup truck was going eastbound along I-80 and didn't see that traffic was stopped ahead. The driver crashed into the rear of a Toyota Tacoma, which then cause a chain reaction with three other cars.

Police said the driver of the Tacoma was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person had major injuries and the initial pickup driver had minor injuries.

The driver who died hasn't been identified at this time, and DUI is not suspected as a factor.
