SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Myke Scholl, a Sacramento State basketball player and incoming University of the Pacific assistant basketball coach, died Monday after a recent cancer diagnosis.
Scholl was hired in April to be the assistant coach for the men's program and was entering his first season at the university. During a June interview, Scholl said he and the university's staff were "here to win ball games, and we're all very excited for the upcoming season," according to UOP.
Before being hired at UOP, Shcoll was the assistant head coach at Long Beach State for the past six seasons, spending 10 seasons at the university.
"Well-known worldwide for his basketball acumen and development skills, Scholl was a tireless recruiter who brought in some of the biggest stars for Long Beach State Men's Basketball over the last ten years," the university said in a statement.
He started his college career at Sacramento State where he played from 1987-1989. He was part of the 1987-1989 tournament team that was inducted into the Sacramento State Basketball Hall of Fame.
Scholl finished his undergraduate career at Ohio Wesleyan and earned a law degree from the University of Maryland, according to UOP.
