SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Neighbors in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood are mourning the loss of a mother, killed in a shooting Friday night. Sacramento Police are still trying to piece together what happened.
Over the last 33 years in Oak Park, Charley Smith says it hasn't been easy living. On Friday, a shooting hit too close to home.
"I was sitting in my house watching TV. And I heard pop," said Smith. "There's 14 gun shots... I counted them."
Sacramento police say a woman was shot just before 5:30 p.m., and later died at the hospital. What led up to the shooting is still unclear, but Smith says he saw a tense moment between the victim and another woman.
"She had gotten in a fight with a friend of hers or I don't know, fist fight," said Smith. "Maybe about an hour later, that's when the gunshots erupted."
While police say the woman was shot at least once, Smith says he believes she was shot multiple times. Now days later, all that remains of the scene is a shattered car window, a growing vigil with balloons spelling "Lillie," candles and a photo.
"It's rough, but she was good people. I was kind of blown away by the whole thing," said Smith.
Smith recalls the better times helping out his fellow neighbor when she needed it most.
"We've been friends for 10 years, at least. I worked on their cars. I mean, we all know each other real good," said Smith. "She was a good person in my book."
As far as suspects or any arrests, Sacramento Police say at this time, there are no updates and the case is still under investigation.
