No longer conjoined, Sandoval twins return home

After a three-week stay at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, once-conjoined twins Erika and Eva Sandoval have returned to their Antelope home.

After a three-week stay at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, once-conjoined twins Erika and Eva Sandoval have returned to their Antelope home.

The two-and-a-half-year-old sisters were born conjoined from the chest down and were separated last December.

In March, the twins were moved from Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford to the children’s hospital for pediatric rehabilitation. They received three hours each day of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, six days per week.

Aida Sandoval, the twins’ mother told UC Davis officials it is what the twins needed.

“It was a lot for them to do each day, but it kept them busy and challenged,” she said.

In a statement children’s hospital officials said the twins faced challenges learning how to eat and swallow.

“It was a skill that they hadn’t formerly learned since they have been on a nasogastric tube since birth,” the announcement stated.

Some of their favorite food? Jell-o, strawberry jam and peaches.
