3 people injured, more than 40 displaced by 3-alarm apartment fire in North Highlands

Three people were injured and more than 40 people were displaced following a 3-alarm apartment fire, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. — An apartment fire in the North Highlands area left three people injured and over 40 people displaced on Wednesday morning.

The fire started at an apartment complex located at the 3600 block of A Street. According to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, the fire intensity was "incredible" and the three-alarm fire's rapid spread was majorly affected by wind.

"We are fortunate there were no fatalities, and no additional buildings damaged. This fire could’ve easily been much worse if not for the hard work of over 85 firefighters working to contain the blaze to the building of origin."

Three people were injured in the fire, with one person suffering from smoke inhalation, officials said.

Occupants from 32 apartment units spread across two buildings were evacuated. According to Sacramento Metro Fire, all 16 units in one building were damaged. The other building was evacuated "due to the power lines burning and dropping," causing the building to lose power.

The Red Cross is working with the property manager to help the displaced residents find shelter.

According to the Red Cross, 13 people were in need of shelter and are being put up in a hotel for the time being.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
