SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two officers opened fire on a suspected carjacker who allegedly hit three patrol vehicles and injured an officer Thursday morning, Sacramento police said.
The shooting happened near El Camino Avenue and Cantalier Street, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Officials say a car was stolen by a masked carjacker Wednesday and officers found it parked on a curb in North Sacramento Thursday near Cantalier Street and Baseball Alley.
An officer approached the car with a "noncompliant suspect" inside, according to officials. Police said there was a struggle and the officer tased the suspect multiple times but it was "ineffective."
The suspect climbed into the drivers seat and tried to drive away with the initial contacting officer in the vehicle's door frame. The suspect tried to take off and wound up hitting another officer and that officer's vehicle, leaving that officer with injuries to the leg. The officer's injuries were described as moderate but non-life threatening.
The suspect rammed a second patrol vehicle, reversed and hit a third patrol vehicle before officers fired their guns, hitting the suspect at least once.
However, police the suspect drove away in the carjacked vehicle. It was later found in the 500 block of Las Palmas Avenue.
Police said the suspect arrived at a hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was later taken into custody. He'll be booked into jail once he's medically cleared.
The suspect was identified as Clayton Freeman, 32.
Officials are asking anyone with videos of the shooting to send it to the department.
