SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One person is dead and a bystander is in critical condition after a chase and crash led to a law enforcement shooting along I-80 in Citrus Heights.
Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, said their canine unit was with the California Highway Patrol for a chase along eastbound I-80 when the suspect collided with a motorcyclist around 12:20 p.m.
Gandhi said the suspect got out of the car with a knife which then led to law enforcement opening fire. Gandhi said sheriff's office deputies and CHP officers fired at the person, but it's not clear how many shots were fired or which agency shot first. Officials said the shooting involved two CHP officers and a canine deputy.
The suspect, only described as a man, was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The motorcyclist, also only described as a man, was also hospitalized and is in critical condition. No officers were hurt during the incident.
"We never want anybody to get hurt in any law enforcement activity, pursuits or otherwise. That includes the suspect, includes officers, includes citizens. So again, as the investigation is ongoing, we'll determine more about what occurred and definitely try to learn from whatever we find out," said Capt. Mike Sedam, a commander with the California Highway Patrol.
Captain Sedam said the chase began around Norwood and I-80 for a traffic violation. He said the suspect took off from Norwood onto I-80.
Officials are asking people who might have seen anything during the incident to contact them.
"If someone was driving by and they did see anything, again, we not only welcome that information but need that information. We want to paint the most complete picture of what happened. So again, please call us with anything you have," said Gandhi.
Eastbound I-80 at Greenback Lane has been reopened. It was closed for most of Sunday as officials investigated the area.
