SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There's some good news for people who need low-income housing in Sacramento. The public housing waitlist is now open for qualified applicants, and it will stay open until 1,200 families are accepted.
“It’s been about two years since we’ve opened up this particular waitlist,” explained Sarah O'Daniel, assistant director for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. “The reason is because we have gone through the previous waitlist, and we’re down to just a handful of families.”
The waitlist is for one bedroom family units, and properties are scattered throughout the city. These include places like Big Trees Apartments on H Street and Capital Terrace on Capitol Avenue.

While the waitlist is opening up to applications, there are specific requirements.
“The families that are elderly, that’s 62 years and older, or disabled families, have priority,” said O’Daniel. “But, we also give priority on this waitlist to veterans as well as those who are homeless.”
However, being on the list doesn't mean someone will find a place to live soon.
“It isn’t immediate housing because we get on a waitlist,” explained O’Daniel. “However, we hope to serve the families within a two-year period.”
Despite the wait, it’s important for people to get their name on the list now. Once it’s full, the list won’t open again until the next round.
"It is really good for our families to get on the waitlist at www.sacwaitlist.com,” said O’Daniel. “Very important. There’s no fee, so, if somebody is asking for a fee... you’re not on the right website.”
