SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new Sacramento District 2 councilman was tapped at Tuesday's city council meeting.
Shoun Thao, executive director for nonprofit Hmong Youth and Parents United, was appointed by Sacramento city council just after 4 p.m., according to a post by District 3 Councilwoman Karina Talamantes on X, formerly Twitter.
He will serve until the next elected District 2 council member takes office Dec. 10, 2024, according to city documents.
“I think stepping into this role… it really is just to restore services making sure we have the basic resources that communities needs and wants for the next nine months," Thao said.
He was selected over two other applicants
- Raquel Shipp, nonprofit leader and mother
- Timothy Smith, retired public sector employee
Thao wrote in his application for the seat he is interested in serving District 2 in an interim role until a new council member is elected in November. He previously worked at city hall as a District 2 staffer from 2013 to 2020.
Thao currently serves as a Neighborhood Development Action Team (NDAT) community ambassador, communicating with community members who may lack access to programs due to language barriers or cultural competency.
The District 2 seat was left vacant in January after former councilman Sean Loloee resigned following his arrest and federal indictment on charges including conspiracy, obstruction and falsifying records in connection with his Viva Supermarkets business.
