COALINGA, Calif. — A one-year-old boy died after fiery crash in Fresno County on Thursday morning.
The California Highway Patrol responded to a call about a single-vehicle crash that happened around 5:14 a.m. Thursday morning along Highway 5 near the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area.
According to police, the driver was going southbound toward the rest area at around 58 to 60 miles per hour. Officials said she was approaching the on-ramp to the rest stop, didn’t see the road curve, drove away from it and went straight off the road into a grass spot not attached to the freeway. It caused her to hit a tree with the front end of her car.
According to police, a witness saw the crash and went straight over to the car to perform CPR on the one-year-old boy. The boy was taken to a hospital but was ultimately pronounced dead while in route.
The driver and a three-year-old boy, who was also in the car, were rushed to the hospital. The driver had major injuries and the three-year-old had minor injuries.
Officials said drugs and/or alcohol aren't suspected as factors in the accident.
