Sacramento Charter High School debuts inaugural girls flag football team this season

For the first time in the history of the school, they have a girls flag football team.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Call them trailblazers or call them supremely gifted. Regardless, you'll come to know them as the inaugural Sacramento Charter High School girls flag football team. And, they're the newest team on campus with unrivaled energy.

"We're really making history here," said senior Mikayla Lake. "The first girls flag football team at Sac High. it's just an amazing feeling to know we're setting our mark here."

Sacramento Charter High School has been around since 1856, and in that time, it's never seen this before.

"Having the opportunity to be one of the first teams at Sac High to play flag football," said senior Jordan Pointer. "I want to be able to tell that story."

"Honestly, just because it's one of the first football teams we got, we're going to make history. Class of 25," said senior AJ Lopez.

The dragons are coached by Letticia Gilmore, who's no stranger to flag football herself. She currently runs a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring young girls who participate in the sport.

"It's such an honor to coach these amazing young ladies," Gilmore said. "They're some of the best and the brightest students in Sacramento. I really can't put into words what this means to me. It means so much. I'm about to cry, cause it means that much. I get the opportunity to coach them."

Even though this program is brand new, the girls definitely don't lack any confidence.

"We have a group of talented girls, and they ready to dominate," Lake said. "They're ready to get on everybody. We're coming for ya'll."

So what can we expect to see from this team this season?

"Our goal is to come out every game to be ready to play," Gilmore said. "Do I believe I have the athletes to win every game? Absolutely."

The Dragons kick off their season August 27 against Christian Brothers.
