SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento City Council voted to not extend city manager Howard Chan's contract.
New Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and five other members of the city council voted to reject Chan's extension Tuesday.
In Tuesday's meeting, council member Lisa Kaplan, who represents District 1, thanked Chan for his service to the city. Kaplan was one of his three council members who approved to Chan's contract extension.
"You've given 22 years to the city. I don't like how tonight ended up," Kaplan said. "I thank him for that service and we could have done better. This is not the graceful landing you deserved."
The city of Sacramento is facing a massive $77 million dollar budget shortfall. One of the first major decisions of the new council was deciding to keep Chan, who makes more than $400,000 a year as city manager.
"It's a new era for the city, a transition. It's a new era for a transition of city management," McCarty said.
"We do have amazing city staff. We'll figure out the next chapter what that looks like," McCarty continued.
Chan spent the last eight years as city manager and worked for the city for more than two decades.
The city will now begin the process of identifying a new city manager.
