SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Up to 240 homeless residents in Sacramento will have access to sleeping cabins and trailers starting next week after city manager Howard Chan greenlit a new shelter-and-service campus.
This comes five months after city officials voted to give him the power of finding and opening new safe camping sites.
The new 7.5 acre site at 3900 Roseville Rd. is set to house 60 sleeping cabins and 40 trailers, most of which were previously used during the peak of the pandemic at Cal Expo. Site amenities will include restrooms and showers.
“When we were evaluating City-owned parcels as potential shelter sites, this property checked all the boxes,” Chan said. “It’s safe, secure and has existing infrastructure that can be utilized immediately as well as the potential for growth with additional funding and partners. I would like to thank City staff for their incredible work getting this property up and running so quickly. It was no small feat, and their tireless work made all the difference.”
According to city officials, they examined more than 900 vacant city-owned pieces of land before settling on the Roseville Road campus.
Homeless residents living at the Miller Park Safe Ground site will be transitioned to the new Roseville campus.
Sleeping cabins used at the new campus are the same ones designed by Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration for an upcoming wellness space. Future sites include:
- A new community care campus by Wellspace Health on Stockton Boulevard
- A Safe Stay community by Sacramento County on Watt Avenue
Sacramento city officials say they currently have an inventory of 1,200 emergency shelter beds and safe camping spaces, while county officials say they have a total of 2,600 emergency shelter beds.
