SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Students in the Sacramento City Unified School District will be heading back to the classroom earlier in the next two academic years, officials announced Wednesday.
Earlier in March, the district and the Sacramento City Teachers Association agreed to a learning recovery plan that would add 16 more days over the course of two academic years, or an additional eight days in each year.
What they didn't know yet was if it would apply to the 2024-25 academic years OR the 2025-26. That's now clear.
August 19 is now set to be the first day of the 2024-25 school year, meaning students will come back from break eight days early.
The 16 additional days are now: Aug. 19-23; Aug. 26-28; Aug. 18-22, 2025; and Aug. 25-27, 2025.
Due to the additional days, the California State Board of Education approved the district's request to waive the almost $40 million penalty for not providing the minimum instructional time for the 2021-22 school year due to strikes.
