SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento's Community Engagement Department recently published its first Zine, eight colorful mini pages filled with local events, grant opportunities and more city resources.

The February 2024 edition titled 'Common Sense: Guide To All You Need To Know' is the first officially published copy, said curator Ember de Boer.

"There's actually a vibrant zine community in Sacramento that inspired this," de Boer told ABC10. "I have to give thanks to Jazel Muñoz, she runs zine fairs and fests. She taught me how to make a zine and how it could be an effective communicative tool. I thought I could utilize that same effectiveness for the city."

After studying sculpting and graduating from Sacramento State in 2022 with an art degree, de Boer said she knew she wanted to use her art skills to connect with communities.

De Boer was among five artists hired by the city of Sacramento in November of last year to work with various city departments on creating new artistic ways to engage the community.

"I made good connections, then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and forced me to engage the community," she said. "That's when I found out about this opportunity."

The zine was developed after she met with the city's community engagement team to see what message they wanted to get across.

"It brings me a lot of joy working with the city team and getting people to hear and see the important work they're doing," de Boer said.

She said she plans to distribute the March and April 2024 editions of the zine at artist spaces and centers across Sacramento.

"The monthly eight-page zines aim to diversify outreach, ensuring city resources reach all communities, stemming from the innovative idea from our artist program specialist in residence," said Sacramento Community Engagement manager Lynette Hall.
