Sacramento County offering free tax preparation — do you qualify?

Sacramento County officials announced they're offering a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program for low income residents who qualify.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Sacramento County's Department of Human Assistance is partnering again with the United Way California Capitol Region to offer free income tax preparation for low income residents.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program emphasizes helping workers and families claim the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.

All taxpayers making less than $63,389 per year qualify for the free tax preparation services. Investment income must be $11,000 or less per year.

For the 2023 tax year, Sacramento County officials say the earned income credit ranges from $600 to $7,430.

The Department of Human Assistance on 2700 Fulton Avenue in Sacramento will be available Monday through Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. until April 4. County officials say to bring the following:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Social Security cards for all persons on your tax return
  • All tax forms
  • Last year's tax returns (if available)
