CARMICHAEL, Calif. — A man shot in a standoff in Carmichael with Sacramento County deputies died in a hospital, the sheriff's office said Thursday.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, a man was firing rounds from his apartment around 5:30 p.m. However, Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said the shots didn't appear to be targeted toward anybody. It's not clear how many shots were fired.

Gandhi said the standoff was taking place along the 4700 block of Marconi Avenue and negotiators were speaking with the suspect to get him to come out and surrender peacefully.

In the leadup to the shooting, Gandhi said deputies were able to get the man to get out of the apartment around 9:40 p.m., but he exited with a gun. Gandhi said there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and three deputies. The man was shot and wounded. Officials said the man was taken to a hospital where he later died.

No deputies were hurt during the incident.

The apartments in the area, about 25 to 30, were evacuated for the incident.
