Sacramento family searches for grandmother's urn that was stored in an auctioned-off storage unit

"We're hoping to have the urn found and returned to us by Thanksgiving or Christmas," said Melody Fox.

SACRAMENTO, California — A Sacramento family is searching for their mother's ashes. Melody Fox said her mother's urn was in a storage unit that was recently auctioned off.

"This is the one piece of advice I want you to think about. Don't wait to do something that you think you want to do," said Janice Fox in a video with some of the final words of advice she shared with her family on what would be her last camping trip.

Janice died just a few months later at 74 years old.

The family is now searching for her ashes that were inside a storage unit recently auctioned off to someone in Vacaville.

"We're hoping to have the urn found and returned to us by Thanksgiving or Christmas. Either one would be wonderful cause this is our first holiday without our mother and the backbone of the family," said Melody.

Melody Fox said the urn was being kept at the CubeSmart Self Storage off Florin.

Her sister put it there while having a hard time dealing with their mother's death.

"We have no idea why our sister put our mother's urn in storage and did not keep it with her or keep it with one of us," said Melody.

She worries the ashes could be thrown in a dump somewhere, but they're hoping someone is trying to figure out what to do with them.

"If they have the urn or they know where they disposed of it, maybe we can go and find it...," said Melody.

Melody said the storage unit told them the buyer doesn't want any contact, and they cut off contact with the family.

"We desperately would like to get our mother home so that we can fulfill her dying wish of going to Greece and putting her ashes on a mountaintop there," said Melody.

Without her ashes, seven children, 26 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren are left with just the memories of their dearest Janice.

ABC10 reached out to the storage company, but they declined to comment.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the urn can call or email ABC10 to be connected with the family.
