Fire burns Sacramento affordable housing project

Sylvia said signaling devices three lanes away from this fire are melted, demonstrating the intensity of the fire.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A fire burned a five-story Sacramento building under construction Tuesday.

The Sacramento Fire Department said the fire happened near Broadway and 19th Street. It's the site of a formerly vacant office building that was in the process of being replaced with 140 units of affordable housing.

Two five-story buildings are being developed on the housing location at Broadway and 19th streets, with two and three-bedroom apartments.

"Currently our crews are mopping up this fire. This was a very difficult and challenging firefight for us. Just because it was under construction, you have tons of exposed wood. It is obviously all flammable and combustible and we had exposure problems as well. There's multiple cars that are damaged across the street just from the intense heat from this fire. So keeping that fire contained to just the building of origin and not letting it spread to the other buildings that were under construction was a challenge for us," said Fire Captain Justin Sylvia.

Sylvia said signaling devices three lanes away from this fire are melted, demonstrating the intensity of this fire.

Roads in the area were closed while crews cleaned up the fire and have since reopened.

No one was injured in the fire and the cause is under investigation.
