SAN-DIEGO, Calif. — A third generation firefighter from Sacramento drowned in Southern California Thursday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

Caeden Laffan, a 25-year-old Oakland Fire Department firefighter, graduated from the recruit academy in 2019. Officials say he drowned while swimming in the early morning in San Diego.

Officials say what led up to his death is still unknown, but they are investigating.

“Caeden Laffan was a young enthusiastic member of the Oakland Fire Department, with a bright future ahead of him, and we’re all heartbroken today after learning of this tragic event,” said Fire Chief Damon Covington. “Our hearts go out to the entire Laffan family, and all who know him, worked with him and loved him.”

Laffan’s father was a firefighter and died while working in November 2020 at the age of 42. His mother also works for the department and his brother is a recruit.
