SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Fire Department doused a three-alarm fire at a tire shop on Del Paso Boulevard Sunday.
Captain Chris Harvey said the three-alarm fire broke out around 4 p.m. 100 firefighters responded with 24 apparatus in an effort to extinguish the wind-driven fire. The fire was located at Unique Tires & Wheels on Del Paso Boulevard near Evergreen Street.
Harvey said embers from the fire flew downwind, threating homes and a church. He said the church sustained some minor damage and one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
Parishioner Paul Chamberlain braved the toxic smoke to protect the church that has been his family's place of worship for more than 40 years.
“It was almost like an epic disaster zone for a moment there," Chamberlain said.
While services at the church had to be canceled, Chamberlain is grateful that it is still standing.
Harvey said the fire is extinguished and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
