Sacramento to host Ironman Triathalon for the first time in 2021

Sacramento's Ironman Triathalon will also serve as a qualifier for the 2022 World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramentans will soon be able to physically test themselves when the city hosts its inaugural Ironman Triathalon on Oct. 24, 2021.

Dave Christen, who is the regional director for Ironman, said, "we couldn't be more excited to bring Ironman to the great city of Sacramento."

The Ironman race consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon run of 26.22 miles.

According to the Ironman's website, the only course details that are currently available is that the race will feature "a down river swim, a bike ride through the agriculture landscape that surrounds Sacramento and a beautiful run along the river trail."  

The Ironman race in Sacramento will also serve as a qualifier for the 2022 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  

Mayor Darrell Steinberg said it seems that every week Sacramento is celebrating something new coming to the city.

"We are an iron man and ironwoman city," Steinberg said. "We go the distance, we never give up and we are always striving to be bigger and better." 

Mike Testa, who is the CEO of Visit Sacramento, said the Ironman Triathalon would bring about $15 million to the city in revenues.
