Sacramento International Airport to build new, second parking garage

Sacramento County awarded a $229 million contract to Sacramento-based, woman-owned Otto Construction, which built the Terminal A parking garage in 2004.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is getting a second parking garage.

Sacramento County’s Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to award a $229 million contract to Sacramento-based, woman-owned Otto Construction, which built the Terminal A parking garage in 2004, according to a news release. The total budget for the garage is $390 million, and construction is scheduled to begin in the fall.

The new garage will be built west of Terminal B and will add 5,500 parking spaces to the airport's parking inventory. Otto reportedly offered flexibility to add features such as solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations, the release said.

Current parking options at SMF include the Terminal A parking garage, the daily lot, hourly parking, and east and west economy parking, according to the airport’s website.

"Increasing close-in garage parking capacity is the number one opportunity we have to improve the guest experience at SMF," said Cindy Nichol, director of the Sacramento County Department of Airports. "By partnering with Otto Construction, our team is set to deliver a parking garage that is both beautiful and functional."

The department is responsible for planning, developing and operating Sacramento County's four airports: Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport and Franklin Field.

The garage project will utilize labor under the airport's recently executed community workforce and training agreement (CWTA), ensuring the project's labor workforce will aid in the development of the regional workforce, the release said.

Improvements and upgrades like the parking garage are part of the airport's $1.3 billion SMForward, which was created to enhance customer convenience, comfort and accessibility at SMF while meeting passenger traffic demands.
