SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was arrested and accused of killing a woman in Sacramento Tuesday.
The Sacramento Police Department said in an update Wednesday that 54-year-old Kevin Birdsong was arrested and booked into the main jail on suspicion of homicide charges.
Sacramento police got a call around 6 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a fight in the 1300 block of North C Street near Loaves and Fishes, a nonprofit known for being the largest homeless service provider in Sacramento
When officers arrived, they found a woman on the ground, according to Sgt. Dan Wiseman, a spokesperson for the police department.
The woman had at least one puncture wound, according to the police department. She died at the scene. Detectives are investigating her death as a homicide. The woman's name hasn't been released.
Loaves and Fishes released a statement saying the entire campus closed unexpectedly Tuesday for the first time in 41 years. The nonprofit is known for being the largest homeless service provider in Sacramento.
"What we can say is that this guest is known and loved throughout our campus community. She was a regular at Maryhouse, Friendship Park, and our Dining Room. It is here that she was seen and heard; we laughed and cried with her more times than we can count. She will be missed," Loaves and Fishes wrote in a statement.
Loaves and Fishes is set to be open on Wednesday.
