Sacramento's McClatchy Pool to be free all summer

McClatchy Pool will have free admission starting Friday, June 21 through the summer months.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento's only public pool in Oak Park will be free to families all summer.

McClatchy Pool, located at 3500 5th Avenue in McClatchy Park, will have free admission starting Friday, June 21 through the summer months.

“As of today, swimming in the McClatchy Park pool is free for all families to enjoy," Vice Mayor Caity Maple said. “I look forward to expanding this program to other pools in District 5.”

The program is called "Caity's Cool Down" and is funded by Walmart. It's meant to increase access to swimming in City Council District 5.

“Giving children a chance to beat the heat, spend time with their neighbors and build community is what summer is all about," Senator Angelique Ashby said.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is urging people to be safe in and around the water and boats, providing these tips:

  • Conduct a Vessel Check: You have the correct safety equipment on board such as life jackets, flares, navigation lights, a horn or whistle, and a first aid kit.
  • File a Float Plan: Email/text a float plan to a loved one or friend with details of your trip in case of an emergency.
  • Wear a Life Jacket: Everyone should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in or near the water.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Do not drink and boat.
  • Supervise Children: Actively supervise children in and around open bodies of water. Appoint a designated “water watcher,” taking turns with other adults.
  • Be Cautious in Rivers: Rivers will rise as snow melts and will be dangerously cold.
