Sacramento men sentenced to prison after nearly $250,000 fraud connected to mail thefts

Federal prosecutors said two Sacramento residents, and others conspired to steal postal locks, create postal keys and steal mail to get stolen checks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two Sacramento men were sentenced to several years in prison for almost $250,000 in check fraud connected to postal thefts.

The U.S. Attorney's Office sentenced 41-year-old Carlos Aranda and 38-year-old Daniel Hunt for conspiracy, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft connected to postal thefts. Aranda was sentenced to 66 months while Hunt received 57 months.

Federal court documents show Aranda and Hunt conspired with other people to steal postal locks, create postal keys and steal mail to gain access to checks.

They all periodically gathered in motel rooms to alter the stolen checks and cash them, federal prosecutors said.
