Warner Bros. film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio closes streets in Sacramento

Filming has been going on for the past couple of weeks in downtown Sacramento and even in Stockton.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — While some fans were glued to their screens watching the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, in downtown Sacramento some people were watching the makings of a new Warner Bros. movie.

Filming has been going on for the past couple of weeks in downtown Sacramento and even in Stockton. It's set to continue in Sacramento through Tuesday, Feb. 13, according to the Sacramento Film and Media Office.

Some of the scenes shot over the weekend and through the start of the week include action scenes like simulated gunfire, car chases, crashes and helicopter work. It’s one of the most expensive movies, with the most action to have ever been shot in Sacramento.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen, who is also a filmmaker, said the film is likely set in and around the 1984 Ronald Reagan era and was shot in some of the places Reagan likely inhabited in Sacramento. Filming is set to wrap up in Sacramento in the next few weeks.

Mark S. Allen spoke to some of the people who watched the film being made.

"There was a car crash and they had some smoke coming out of the car crash. They must have been [filming a] chase scene because we saw a van speed off from a parking spot around the corner. And then there was a chase on foot with some actors, but we couldn't see. And then they were going across into Cesar Chavez Park over there, but of course, they wouldn't let you get anywhere near. I was pretty inside the bubble until I walked home. I realized how far away I was because if you try to go back there they were like 'no, no, no.' At first, the actors were just like right across the street, and by the time I got outside of the bubble I was like three blocks away," said a fan after watching some of the filming.

The unnamed movie directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall and others began filming in the city last week causing brief disruptions to business as usual in the downtown area.

Paul Thomas Anderson, or PTA as his friends call him on the set, has 11 Oscar nominations and a Cannes Film Festival win for "Punch-Drunk Love." Other notable films include "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia" and "There Will Be Blood." His latest film "Licorice Pizza" was nominated for multiple Oscars at the 94th Academy Awards.
