SACRAMENTO, California — Ari Pelto is preparing for his first concert as the new conductor of the Sacramento Philharmonic Opera. It's a process that he said all starts with their talented orchestra.
The passionate and romantic music of Brahm's is featured in Pelto's first concert as the orchestra's new conductor.
“It's got anger, it's got torment, but it's got great moments of sunny happiness, and each each of those touch on all of our experiences as human beings," said Pelto, of the music.
“You feel a sense of impending sorrow or excitement. In a moment of great tenderness, you feel a storm brewing. In a moment of storm, there's also compassion and generosity of spirit,” Pelto added.
Building on a strong legacy with a bright future, Pelto said the Philharmonic has emerged out of the pandemic with record-breaking ticket sales, sold out performances and community support.
Later in the season, their hall will also be packed with local third, fourth and fifth grade students from all around the Sacramento region.
In "Link Up," students learn to sing and play music in their school district during the school year. Each spring, they all come together for a concert alongside the Sacramento Philharmonic and opera musicians.
“Sacramento is extremely lucky to have such a fantastic orchestra and organization," said Pelto.
Many of the musicians on the stage are local and are even teachers themselves. Giving back to the community through music education programs and quality performances is a top priority for them.
ABc10's Lora Painter will be hosting a pre-concert talk with Pelto on the stage Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. They'll be discussing music and the people who make it happen along with other insights from Pelto and the Philharmonic's guest violinist. The music starts at 7:30 p.m.
