Person arrested after hours-long standoff in south Sacramento | Update

Sacramento police were investigating reports of an armed person in the Valley Hi / North Laguna neighborhood.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — The Sacramento Police Department was investigating reports of an armed person in the Valley Hi / North Laguna neighborhood on Monday. The person was arrested on suspicion of felony firearm related charges after nine hours.

The police department said officers were at the 8200 block of Essen Way and believed an armed person was in the area. Police received a call around 2:15 a.m. about a person with a gun. A second caller said a person was jumping fences in the area and was in their backyard with a gun. Sacramento police surrounded the neighborhood.

A spokesperson for the police department said they believe the person was inside the police perimeter at an unoccupied home. Sacramento police were trying to communicate with the person for several hours. He was detained around 11:45 a.m.

People nearby were asked to evacuate their homes. Those who didn't want to leave temporarily sheltered in place, according to police.

The suspect was identified as Luis Martin, 28 of Sacramento.
