WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An airplane made an emergency landing in West Sacramento Thursday.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Amar Gandhi said it was a sheriff's airplane. The plane made an emergency landing around 8:20 a.m. because of a mechanical issue while in the air, according to Gandhi. It's unclear exactly what mechanical issue impacted the plane, but Gandhi said the pilot reported engine failure.
The plane departed Sacramento Mather Airport heading for Woodland for a routine oil change at a mechanic shop, according to Gandhi. The plane landed in a field near Lake Washington Boulevard and Village Parkway. Only the pilot was in the plane at the time of the landing.
A spokesperson with the Sacramento Fire Department said there were no injuries.
The plane is a total loss, the front wheel dug into the field and flipped, according to the sheriff's office. The pilot escaped out of the back of the plane.
Gandhi said the sheriff's office used the plane for transporting witnesses and surveillance.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the emergency landing.
