SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State announced Thursday at a boxing gym in Sacramento its plans for the first-ever Causeway Boxing Classic.
On Friday, Nov. 22, which is the eve of the annual rival Causeway Classic football game between Sacramento State and University of California, Davis, the universities will feature a full card of amateur fights between the two schools.
The fights are part of plans for a dynamic Causeway Classic weekend, the school said. A venue for the bouts has not been determined.
Thursday’s announcement was made at Flawless Boxing & Fitness on Broadway. It’s where Sacramento State boxers train as part of the college’s Combat U program. Flawless is owned by Combat U head coach Brandon Gonzáles, who was a top-ranked amateur professional fighter, the college said.
Combat U is reportedly the first-ever university-backed development program for combat sports.
“It provides an entry point for students seeking a world-class education as well as high-level opportunities for combat sports training and competition,” Sacramento State said in a statement.
The program is a public-private partnership between Sacramento State and Urijah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness, according to the university.
