SACRAMENTO, Calif — SacRT's SmaRT Ride program is ending at the end of the year.

The program was started back in 2018 as ride-share service where customers can use an app to request a ride within service boundaries.

Citing an analysis, SacRT announced they'll be ending the program as they prepare for a transition to what they say will be a more cost-effective rideshare voucher program. That program is expected to launch in January 2025.

SacRT arrived at the decision after an assessment of SmaRT Ride's service performance and financial impact. Ultimately, the SmaRT Ride's operation costs are around $8.4 million, with an operating cost per passenger of more than $47.

The Rideshare Voucher Program, which by SacRT's own account would not be identical to SmaRT Ride, would save about $7.6 million and include many of the same benefits.

Officials are still refining how the new program will work.

Over the next two months, SacRT will be scheduling presentations and taking input on the proposed rideshare program.
