SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Strong winds and rain from the weekend storm caused significant damage to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) power grid — within the span of 48 hours, a total of 200,000 customers lost power.
Close to 15,000 customers across Northern California remained without power as of 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to SMUD.
Approximately 50 power polls came down and more than 430 wires are down, mostly from trees falling into lines, according to a SMUD spokesperson.
Each power poll takes eight hours to repair on average and requires road closures and coordination times with local law enforcement.
"SMUD has more than 80 crews working 24/7 to complete damage assessments and make repairs and restore power to all customers safely and as quickly as possible.," the spokesperson said. "Working in challenging conditions on complex tasks, crews will continue efforts around-the-clock to restore power to customers, some of whom may experience extended outages."
