Firefighters contain Sacramento vegetation fire threatening structures

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A grass fire Saturday afternoon in Sacramento County threatened to burn structures, firefighters said

The fire burned in the 7300 block of Levee Road near Elverta Road in northern Sacramento County and spread to about 60 acres in size. Smoke from the blaze could be seen from across Sacramento.

Crews were first called to the scene around 2:06 p.m. Saturday. The Sacramento Fire Department said that the fast-moving fire was burning in light, flashy grass. Sac Fire Battalion Chief Dave Lauchner says while the fire started small, winds and fuel made it rapidly spread.

Terrain, weather conditions and the lack of hydrants in the area made the blaze "a very difficult fire to fight," Lauchner said.

Lauchner says the structures threatened in the fire were not destroyed, but they're assessing damages.

No injuries were reported in this fire and the cause is under investigation. Firefighters will be in the area mopping up the fire through the evening.
