Suspicious package that caused evacuation Capitol annex swing space not anthrax, officials say

Officials said the package was intercepted by the mailroom.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A suspicious package delivered to the 9th floor of California Capitol swing space annex temporarily caused evacuations Thursday.

According to Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for the governor's office, the package was intercepted by the mailroom and had an unknown substance labeled as anthrax.

The building was evacuated while the substance was tested. It was confirmed to not be anthrax or dangerous.

"We thank our first responders, including the California Highway Patrol, the Sacramento Fire Department, and the California Office of Emergency Services for the quick response," said Gardon.
