Transportation options for Sacramento State students ahead of new school year

School starts next week. Here's how students can get around campus and into Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There's less than a week until the first day of school for Sacramento State.

Students have a few options for transportation on campus and around Sacramento besides walking, biking, or rideshare. The free on-campus transit options include the Herky Streetcar, which operates inside the inner campus, and the Hornet Line shuttle, which connects the main campus to outer buildings and the 65th Street light rail station.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District also has numerous buses arriving and departing from campus daily. Students can use SacRT's fixed route services with a regional transit commuter sleeve at no additional cost. They can get those online at the parking portal or the University Transportation and Parking Services (UTAPS) office. Sacramento State employees can purchase a 6-month commuter sleeve for $40.

According to UTAPS, a driver shortage is impacting service on the Hornet line this fall.

Jeff Dierking, Director of University Transportation and Parking Services, says they've made some new hires.

"It's always difficult throughout the summer months and also hiring professional drivers to keep our services going, we do utilize professional drivers and student drivers on campus," said Dierking. "But we recently onboarded some new professional drivers and a couple of new student drivers to help bolster our ranks so we're hoping any service disruption that we might have would be minimal."

There's a shuttle tracking app people can use to track shuttles in real-time and find out about any disruptions.

People can also download the Sacramento State app, which shows parking lot occupancy and real-time shuttle tracking.

UTAPS has social media pages people can follow to learn more about what they're up to and get trip-planning advice.

The full shuttle service starts on the first day of class, which is Monday, Aug. 26.
