SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man reportedly trespassing inside the Golden 1 Center early Tuesday morning was rushed to the hospital after falling unconscious after being restrained by police during his arrest.
Sacramento police were first called out to the trespassing call around 3:30 a.m., according to Sacramento Police spokesperson, Cpl. Luis Canela.
Security officers told police the man was acting erratically, running inside the building, refusing commands, and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
“When officers arrived on scene, a subject was already detained and handcuffed by security,” said Canela.
Despite being handcuffed, the suspect remained combative and police officers called for the use of the max restraint, Canela said.
Maximum restraint is a technique where officers place a subject face down on the ground with their arms handcuffed (double-locked) behind their back. It also incorporates two or more leg restraints.
This restraint technique is typically used when subjects remain violent and combative despite being handcuffed. The technique is only allowed as a last resort by some police departments.
Officers said the man became "unresponsive" as they were taking him into custody. The officers performed CPR and kept an eye on the man’s vitals before an ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital. That man’s condition has not been released.
The Sacramento Kings released a statement about this incident, Wednesday afternoon:
“We want to thank the security personnel, Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento Fire Department for their prompt response and action. As there is an ongoing Sacramento Police Department investigation, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Because the trespasser experienced some kind of medical emergency while in police custody, the department said they will conduct an investigation into the incident. No other details have been released.
