'Unruly attendees' delay Sacramento City Council meeting

Officials could be heard saying three people were asked to leave prior to going to recess.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Disruptions caused the Sacramento City Council meeting to get delayed by roughly two hours Tuesday evening.

Sacramento City Council was hearing public comments on an item for Climate Action and Implementation when a person in the audience started interrupting the meeting.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg said she had been warned three times and announced that the meeting would be in recess for about 10 minutes. Officials could be heard saying three people were asked to leave prior to going to recess.

A spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department the long pause was due to "unruly attendees" in the chambers.

9th Street was blocked off near City Hall as people left the council chambers. An ABC10 crew saw people sitting inside the chambers, but they would ultimately leave the building and the City Council would retake their seats two hours later.

Mayor Steinberg issued a statement after the long pause in the meeting.

"We must uphold the rules. People have a full right to participate. When anyone deliberately and continually interrupts the meeting, that prevents others from participating. We will insist on the public business being completed peacefully and without disruption," said Steinberg.
