SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Veterans across Northern California are being honored Saturday as the 2023 Veterans Day parades march through local towns.
The day is born from the end of World War I and is also known as Armistice Day, which is when fighting in the war came to a stop. For folks choosing to stay in town for this year's commemoration, there are plenty of opportunities to pay your respects to the veterans.
Here are the events going on across Northern California:
Auburn
- Starts at 10:50 a.m.
- The parade begins at the corner of Lincoln Way and Cleveland Avenue. It will pause at the Central Square at 11 a.m. for a brief patriotic ceremony followed by the release of doves, a 'fly-over,' and a three volley rifle salute followed by TAPS. Parade marchers will resume on High Street and end at the Gold Country Fairgrounds.
- First 500 veterans to present to the parade will be awarded a commemorative medal
- This year's Grand Marshals are Korean War Veterans.
- Parade representatives will also be observing the 70th anniversary of Armistice, though the 70th anniversary itself isn't until 2024.
Davis
- The prelude begins at 10:30 a.m. while the program commences at 11 a.m.
- The event will be at 820 Pole Line Road
Elk Grove
- From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- The parade begins on 8820 Elk Grove Blvd. at the Cosumnes Community Service District. The parade ends at Elk Grove Park on Elk Grove-Florin Road.
Fairfield
- Commemoration ceremony and concert begins at 10 a.m. at the Downtown Theater.
- Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. along Texas Street.
Folsom
- From 9-11 a.m.
- The parade begins in the Target and Home Goods parking lot on East Bidwell Street near Montrose Drive. It will travel westbound on E. Bidwell Street, northbound on Coloma Street and proceeds to Natoma Street. Parade marchers will wrap up with a brief ceremony at Veterans Memorial in City Lions Park.
- More than 2,000 people are expected to take part in the 2023 parade.
Lincoln
- From 11:11 a.m. to noon.
- The service starts at the Placer County Veterans Monument on McBean Park Drive.
Modesto
- The parade begins at 9 a.m. on O Street down to Needham Street, then to Graceada Park.
- Veterans Day ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. and is organized by the American Legion, Veterans Day Parade Committee and Veterans Chamber of Commerce NorCal.
Sacramento
- The parade starts at 11 a.m. and the ceremony commences at 1 p.m.
- Event activities will include a military fly-over, car show, raffle and prizes.
- This year's event honors 50 years of Vietnam veterans' service and 75 years of women in the military.
Stockton
- Doors open at 9:45 a.m. and the program begins one hour later at the Bob Hope Theater at 242 E Main St.
West Sacramento
- The parade begins at 11 a.m. at 1100 Clarendon St. and goes to West Acre Road, ending at Park & Stone Boulevard.
