3 Sacramento communities open late for family fun

Spring is in full swing and the weather is perfect to get out and have some fun. Here are 5 things going on around the city to jumpstart your weekend.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There are a bunch of events going on around Sacramento to help you get a jumpstart on the first weekend of May.

With Spring in full swing, and temperatures rising, several districts are staying open late each month. From R Street to the Triangle District, there's plenty to do!

Here are a few things that caught our eye:

R Street Pop-Up Series

The R Street District is set to kick off the first night of their “R Street Pop-Up Series” on Thursday, May 2.

The Pop-Up Series runs along the R Street Corridor and takes place every Thursday in May and will end on the first Thursday in June, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Different artists will be featured performing pop-up shows along the corridor. The May 2 performers include:

  • At 11th Street: Live music duo Kevin Seconds from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • At 13th Street: Live art show featuring Anna Dubois from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • At 14th Street: Garden and succulent plant vendor Tufarock Design from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • At 17th Street: DJ/hul hoop dance MC Ham from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

First Friday in Oak Park

The month of May is the start of Bike Month in Sacramento. And First Friday in Oak Park is kicking off the event with a celebration.

The May 3 event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature marching music by the Ophir Prison Marching Kazoo Band & Temperance Society, LMTD.

The Guild Theater, located at 2828 35th Street, is hosting a family-friendly movie night and a silent disco at Esther’s Park.

Off Broadway Blues and Jazz Café, at 2863 35th Street, is hosting a Frist Friday dance. Admission to the dance is free and they will stay open until 11 p.m.

Sac Brew Bike will also be offering tours of the corridor. As its name implies, First Friday takes place on the first Friday of every month.

Capitol Friday’s at the Capitol Garage

Every Friday the Capitol Garage, located at 1500 K Street, hosts “Capitol Friday’s” from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

The event showcases Reggae music and “other international beats” put on by DJ Veyn.

Admission is free before 10:30 p.m. and there are $5 drink specials all night long.

And don't forget...

Fiesta de Calle - Cinco de Mayo Festival

The "Fiesta de Calle" Cinco de Mayo Festival is happening at Southside Park, located at 2115 6th Street, on May 4, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and May 5, from noon to 6 p.m.

The two-day event boasts free admission and will host a slew of activities, including music, food, drinks, arts and crafts.
