Love is love at any age.
The Ikea cafeteria is a hot spot for single seniors in Shanghai looking for love later in life.
In fact, it's too hot of a spot.
This week, the Swedish furniture store rolled out a strict "no food, no seating" rule to discourage senior daters from sitting for long periods of time, according to the BBC.
The move comes after complaints of the older patrons purchasing a cup of coffee or bread and staying for most of the day. A staff note posted at the store also mentioned lovers’ quarrels and fights, even spitting.
There's yet to be a phenomenon of single seniors looking for a new flame at Ikea stores across the U.S. but they are likely looking for love elsewhere.
There were 19 million unmarried people over the age of 65 in 2015, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report. That's 18 percent of all unmarried people over the age of 18 in the country.
So where do singles in the older community meet in hopes of finding love?
"They go any place you and I would go," said Dr. Cheryl Osborne, a professor of gerontology and the director of gerontology at California State University, Sacramento.
But there are places the mature community prefer to meet for dates in Sacramento.
Osborne said coffee shops are popular spots for seniors to meet around the city, especially since there are so many to choose from in the area.
The Hart Senior Center is also a lively location for the older community, according to Osborne. The center offers many programs and classes such as ballroom dancing, yoga and a 'Craft 'n Chat' art class.
Many participants live nearby and walk to the center, Osborne explained.
Sacramento State offers the Renaissance Society program. The university partners with the organization and allow members to teach each other classes on topics of their choice.
"It's a learning and retirement type of program," Osborne said.
The Renaissance Society used to only be open to members 55 and older, but is now open to all ages although most members are older adults, according to Osborne.
The program started with six lifelong learners in 1986 and now boasts more than 1,700 members, Osborne said. Members sign up for classes per semester and pay a fee, but membership is free for those 90 and older.
For the active mature community, the gym can be more than a place to work out, it can also be a place to find a new partner, according to Osborne.
Just because the internet and social media came later in life for today's older adults, it doesn't mean they're not using it as a dating tool.
Online dating site users ages 55 to 64 doubled from 6 percent in 2013 to 12 percent this year, according to the Pew Research Center. About three percent of adults ages 65 and older use online dating sites.
Keep in mind, only about 15 percent of Americans have used internet dating to find love.
Osborne said most of the adults she knows ages 65 to 85 are 'extremely mobile'.
"Most of them I can only get a hold of online," Osborne said.
The AARP suggests for older adults to try SeniorPeopleMeet.com or BabyBoomerPeopleMeet.com.
There are also interest-geared sites such as DateMyPet.com for pet lovers.
