Samuel Lee Cook identified as hit-and-run suspect who died running into lanes of I-80

CHP said Cook got out of his car and ran into the lanes of I-80 before he was hit by a big rig

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — The man who ran into the lanes of Interstate 80 and was killed by a big rig Wednesday afternoon was identified as Samuel Lee Cook, 31.

The California Highway Patrol said Cook was a suspect in a hit-and-run investigation before he ran into the lanes I-80 in Placer County.

According to CHP, the hit-and-run was a minor crash that was reported by the victim, who also provided a description of Cook's car.

An officer stopped Cook and had him pull over to the right shoulder of Interstate 80, west of King Road, just after 1 p.m.

CHP said Cook got out of his car and ran into the lanes of I-80 before he was hit by a big rig. The big rig ultimately came to stop on the right shoulder, but Cook died from his injuries. It's not clear why he ran into the traffic lanes.

Officials said it's not clear if Cook was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time. However, the driver of the big rig was not impaired during the incident.
