SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — A San Joaquin County man was arrested early Thursday morning after he allegedly opened fire on deputies responding to a security alarm.
According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an alarm at the Pick-N-Pull on Clark Drive in Stockton around 1:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, deputies saw three people running from the perimeter of the property. The deputies chased the suspects along the canal and took cover behind a cement fence separating the Buddhist temple from a nearby home.
The sheriff’s office says a homeowner got an alert from his front door security camera and called his grandson, who had an AR-15 and started searching the area in a golf cart.
The sheriff’s office says the grandson came across the deputies on the temple property and he fired two shots at them before they could identify themselves as deputies. The deputies took cover and issued commands to the grandson, who complied and was taken into custody.
“This incident underscores the vital importance of allowing trained law enforcement to handle dangerous situations," the sheriff's office wrote Thursday in a news release. "Taking the law into your own hands can escalate conflicts and lead to tragic outcomes.”
The man was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine and possession of a silencer, according to law enforcement.
The three suspects at the center of the alarm call were reportedly not found.
