Tire detaches from trailer, kills driver along I-5 in San Joaquin County

Four other passengers in the car were taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from minor to precautionary.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — A driver was killed after a tire detached from a trailer, went over a guardrail and struck a car along Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County.

The California Highway Patrol said the incident was reported just before 6 p.m. along I-5 near Highway 12. 

According to CHP, a 2019 Chevy pickup truck was pulling a concrete pumping trailer along southbound I-5 when one of the trailer's tires detached and went over the guardrail. 

After it went over the guardrail, the tire hit the front of a 2022 Toyota Sienna that was heading northbound on I-5. 

The impact caused fatal injuries to the driver. Four other people in the car were taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from minor to precautionary.

The driver of the Chevy pickup is cooperating with investigators. CHP said drugs or alcohol are not considered to be factors in the incident.
